Have you heard about Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse in Nova Scotia, Canada? I sure hadn’t before I started planning our trip through eastern Canada. But then I saw pictures of this incredible landscape and this picturesque lighthouse and I couldn’t wait to go!
So, Where is Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse?
Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse is located on the eastern seashore of Nova Scotia in the quaint fishing village of Peggy’s Cove. This is about 45 minutes south of Halifax, NS. The entire area here is gorgeous! There are several incredibly picturesque villages nearby too. So when planning your trip you might want to look into which ones you’d like to stop at near here as well. (See more on this at the bottom of this post.)
Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse
Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse is the most well-known lighthouse in all of Nova Scotia. It is also probably the most photographed lighthouse in all of Canada! It’s not hard to see why. But this does make it a busy tourist attraction and this site can often be crowded.
Our family chose to visit on a weekday summer afternoon and practically had the entire place to ourselves! So if you are able to visit in the early morning or late afternoon, I highly recommend that.
Incredible Landscape
I Love the landscape at Peggy’s Cove! A spectacular sea of white granite, huge boulders just begging to be explored and a brilliantly blue sea crashing in the background. I could have spent all day here!
Now for a few warnings. Do you see how some of the rocks closer to the water are darker? This means that they get wet from waves crashing upon them. It is very important to not walk onto these darker rocks. The ocean water here is dangerous. Rogue (sneaker waves) commonly splash up on the rocks, even on calm, sunny days. These waves are unpredictable and unfortunately each year a few people get swept off these rocks and into the ocean. So only walk on and explore the white, dry rocks here at Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse.
Our family absolutely loved exploring this rock wonderland at Peggy’s Cove!
Our children’s imaginations immediately went wild when we stepped out onto these rocks. They were coming up with games left and right to play with each other. They wanted to climb on every rock, try and hide in every crevice between the boulders and search for ocean creatures in all of the small tide pools. I had no idea how much they would love to play in this landscape. I wish that I had scheduled more time here for that. So if you have kids that love to explore or you do yourself, then you may want to consider scheduling a little more time here as well.
So, How Long Should You Visit Peggy’s Cove?
I only scheduled 1 hour and 30 minutes for our visit. I thought that this would be plenty of time to “just see a lighthouse.” Unfortunately, I did not realize how much my children and I would love playing on these rocks! So in retrospect I would recommend scheduling a little more time here. This is especially true if you think that you or your family will enjoy more time to explore this incredible landscape.
A Great Place for Fun Family Photos!
These are a few picture ideas for you that we loved taking.
We were loving this unreal landscape! It’s crazy how much fun a bunch of rocks can be!

Only 6 Minutes from Peggy’s Cove
The area here is like that out of a beautiful painting. So when you visit you might want to check out some of the picturesque fishing villages in the area. We chose to stop for dinner at Shaw’s Landing in West Dover. This is only 6 minutes down the road from Peggy’s Cove, the food was wonderful and the photo above was taken from their deck while we were eating! I still can’t get over how beautiful this area is.
Traveler Tip: Make sure you walk around outside or drive around this area of Nova Scotia in the evening. The sky and scenery are even more breathtaking! And that’s saying something!
Lighthouse Trail
If you like visiting lighthouses then you might also want to look into Nova Scotia’s Lighthouse Scenic Drive. This is a beautiful drive that follows Nova Scotia’s South Shore for 364 miles from Halifax to Yarmouth. Here you’ll find many great lighthouses, but I will say that Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse is the highlight of the journey.
