Let's Find Your Traveling Feet!

15 Best Travel & Adventure Books Series for Kids (Elementary to Tweens)

by Jenny May 3, 2020
3.8K

Are you looking for great travel books for kids, where they can discover more about our world through exciting adventures? Does your child like to read about far off destinations where the main characters go on thrilling adventures? Or do you and your child simply like to know more about a country or city that you may visit while on vacation, so that you know more of what to expect. This is where I’d like to help.

Discovering Great Series

When my own children began reading like crazy I was overwhelmed at first by which books I should buy. I didn’t know what series were good? And I had no clue as to what books would be worth it to buy. Fortunately, all of this began to change when my oldest was introduced to three different series in school: The Magic Tree House Series, Ranger in Time Series and Race the Wild. My kids were hooked! And I loved how they brought travel and historical events into an exciting story. All of the sudden I realized that this is what I had been wanting for my kids! I wanted my kids to learn about the world while enjoying good adventure books! Previously I had had no clue that series like these even existed! Now I knew I needed to find more!

Over the last eight years I have collected a wealth of these kid’s books regarding travel, world adventure, history, culture and more. And in the process I have come across some really incredible series! Each of these kid’s book series found engaging ways to combine adventures throughout the world while providing a little information, culture or history to children in exciting ways.

These are the books I want to share with you! And these are the books that I want to help you easily find for your child!

Magic Tree House

by Mary Pope Osborne    Age 6-9

Our family loves the Magic Tree House series! Follow the adventures of Jack and Annie as they travel through time and space in their magic tree house to incredible destinations around the world. These books can be read individually but it is preferred to read them in order because there is an underlining mystery that progresses throughout the series of how their tree house came to be. This series contains so many incredible adventure books for kids. There are more than 80 books between the original Magic Tree House Series, the sequel Merlin’s Missions and in the Fact Tracker Books. And don’t worry if you just want to get one that’s on a topic that your child loves, because each book can be read on it’s own as well.

If you are interested, the first book in the series is Dinosaurs before Dark

by Kate Messner    Age 7-10

I love the Ranger in Time Book series! Here a time traveling dog (you’ll have to read the series to find out how) introduces children, in a gentle way, to different events and time periods of history. I really like how these books are told from the point of view of a dog. I think this makes learning about historical events fun, even for kids who normally don’t like history.

A Walk in …

by Salvatore Rubbino    Age 5-8

This is a beautiful series that introduces children to three amazing cities by taking a walk. On this walk your child will discover the famous sites of these cities and learn a little bit about them. Another great thing about these books is that if your child is younger, you can read just the large print like a story but if your child is older then they can also read the smaller print which gives a lot of fascinating information about the city. This series is also perfect if you will be traveling to or know someone in these destinations.

I Survived

by Lauren Tarshis    Age 8-12

The I Survived series is a great series that introduces children to some pretty terrible events in history in a child friendly manner. (Due to the nature of the topics I placed this in the older child category, even though the books themselves are rated 8-12.) The I Survived books are fantastic to read before visiting a site or memorial of one of these tragic events or simply f your child just wants to understand more about different events in history.

I absolutely Love this series! If you are wanting to find a book about practically any famous place, person, natural landform or event all around the world, you probably can find it in this kids book series! And even though they aren’t true adventure series, they are filled with great real adventures from actual famous people.

This series is great to read before traveling and perfect for homeschooling. I just love how they are filled with so many incredible facts, original photos and real-life adventures from real places and real heroes. This is a fantastic kids book series to learn about the world.

Rick Riordan’s Series

This is the absolute favorite series in our house right now and for the past 2 years! It is actually 5 separate series that go together as one big story line. In total there are more than 20 books plus numerous side stories that support the main story line. With these books my kids have learned about Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse mythology as well as discovered many different places across the world in exciting adventures. When we travel, we love to visit the sites mentioned in these books as well. My children love being in the same spot where some serious action took place in these books. I highly recommend these books to anyone!
